Stop Being Wasteful! You Don’t Need a TV, TiVo, Cable or Satellite Service!
WARNING: The following statements may cause confusion, sheer disbelief, shock, pity, or even tears in many people, namely you television, TiVo, cable or satellite loving folk.
Get ready for this. Believe it or not I have never had cable television in my entire adult life. It’s true. It’s true. Come to think of it, I don’t recall watching much, if any, cable TV as an adolescent either. And you can forget about TiVo and satellite service!
I know, I know, this sounds totally fabricated. Also, as if I haven’t been flabbergasting enough, I haven’t had a working television since the digital conversion in February, April or whenever it was of this year … or was it last year?
So what gives?
I absolutely refuse to waste money on cable, satellite, TiVo … or even a television for that matter when there’s the Internet!!
Ah, how I love the Internet!
For one flat fee per month I can receive high speed Internet service and have access to … well … EVERYTHING!!!! E-VERY THING!!!!!!!!!
Ahhh, how I do love the Internet!!!
So weep not for me. Weep for yourself! Weep over all that money you’ve spent and may still be spending on digital TVs, a digital TV converter, TiVo, and cable or satellite service when all you really need is a PC, and not even a fancy one, and high speed Internet service.
Think about it. Many, if not most, but certainly enough of the TV shows, news shows, sports shows, music videos, religious sermons, ET CETERA, ET CETERA, ET CETERA that you like to watch on your TV are either at the click of a computer mouse (or at the touch of a remote control button for fancy smancy PCs). And all you would have to pay is 1, less than $50 a month Internet bill instead of multiple bills!
Oh how I love the Internet, not to mention saving money!!!
Now, in case you’re saying the Internet isn’t enough and you’re whining about how much you need your TV, TiVo, cable or satellite service just stop it! Just stop it now! Stop whining and stop being wasteful!! You can live perfectly well without a TV and TiVo, and cable or satellite service.
How could that possibly be you ask? Here’s what you do. You do what I do! For the latest, breaking, local, and international news reports logon to:
- CNN Live at http://www.cnn.com or
- FoxNEWS Live at http://www.foxnews.com or
- Similar websites with news videos or podcasts
Similar websites, for example, could include the NewsHour Podcast with Jim Lehrer on the Public Broadcast Station or the streaming video at http://www.pbs.org/. There’s also National Public Radio’s hourly news summary, 24 hour news stream, or their Talk of the Nation talk radio program at http://www.npr.org/.
All of the above websites are more than enough to keep anyone abreast of the latest, breaking, local, and international news reports.
Ok, so that covers the news. Whatsoever will you do about your favorite television shows (new and old), your favorite movies (new and old), your favorite music videos (new and old), religious sermons, etc?
Again, do what I do! For many new and old TV shows and movies, trailers and clips, logon to:
Here’s some helpful information about each site.
All TV shows on Fancast and Sidereel that do not link directly to the parent network—i.e., ABC, CBS, FOX, the CW, and some cable channels—transfer their data from the Hulu archives. As for movies, all of the movies I’ve accessed thus far on both Fancast and Sidereel were also streamed from Hulu.
Which is the best of the three? You decide for yourself.
Continuing with more helpful information about each site:
1. Fancast
They offer an extensive network filter and genre filter (when compared to Hulu and Sidereel).
They have a TV section that includes a TV Schedule (for both traditional and cable networks), TV Highlights, TV News, and a Movies on TV Tonight category.
They have a store where you can download some newly released and older films on a pay per view or pay to own basis. You can also purchase a season pass for certain television shows or purchase certain shows by the episode.
2. Sidereel
They have within their TV Schedule the option to view the latest missed episode(s) of many popular shows for the current week and the previous week. Shows older than 2 weeks have to be accessed outside of the schedule on the main page for TV show listings.
3. Hulu
They don’t have to compete with Fancast and Sidereel where features are concerned because it’s from their archives that these two websites transfer the content for most of the TV shows, and maybe all of the films, that they list on their sites.
Also, coming soon to Fancast is a service called On Demand Online. As described on the website, On Demand Online is “anytime access to the Comcast universe of entertainment.”
Sounds nice. But there’s a catch. To partake of this service Fancast states: “Here’s all you need: Comcast High-Speed Internet; Comcast Digital Cable; Your Comcast.net email address.”
If you want to share a movie, TV episode, clip or trailer with those on your social networks, email lists, or Twitter list, Sidereel seems to be the best way to go.
Interestingly, only Hulu requires that you sign up for an account for certain movies. Booo!!! I don’t like this.
For example, I tried to watch Life (starring Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy) on Hulu and was prompted to sign up for an account (or sign into an existing account) because the movie is for mature audiences only. Similar occurred when I attempted to access the movie from Sidereel. However, on Sidereel I was only required to click a box which stated that I was older than 17. Nothing was required of me when I tried to watch the same movie on Fancast.
The one great thing about all 3 websites, aside from the fact that they all offer FREE TV shows and movies for our viewing pleasure, is not having to install any software on our computers in order to view a show or a movie and not having to download a FREE show or film in order to watch it. I love this because I hate having to download stuff onto my computer. Besides, streaming (data from a server) beats downloading (or saving a file to your computer to watch) any day! The sole exception to the above are the shows and movies that you have to download in the Fancast Store.
Are there other sites similar to Hulu, Fancast, and Sidereel? I’m sure there are. Feel free to research them for yourself.
Of course for all your music (and informational, instructional or educational) videos there’s the FREE service of www.YouTube.com.
Regarding accessing religious sermons online, there are audio and video podcasts, MP3 and MP4 downloads, and/or video streaming and videos on demand, not to mention live services on many religious websites. How great is that!?
So there you have it—how to SAVE money on your TiVo, cable or satellite service bills!! You can SAVE money by getting rid of all of them! You don’t even need your TV! You can SAVE money on your power bill by pulling the plug on the old boob tube today.
Remember, all you need is a good PC with a high speed Internet connection to access your favorite TV shows, movies, music, sermons, AND MORE!
Stop being wasteful!
