Car Maintenance Advice: How to Save Money on Car Repairs in 5 Simple Steps

First off, no I am not a mechanic.  Second, no I am not mechanically inclined.  Third … well … just … no!  No, I know nothing about cars other than how to drive one.  I, HOWEVER, DO KNOW how to save money on car repairs.  And I DO KNOW enough from dealing with my own car to offer some decent, really common sense, car maintenance advice.  So let’s get to it.

I’m positive that this car maintenance advice is not new to any of you.  Yet, for whatever reason(s), many of you probably don’t do these very simple things to save money on car repairs that can very well be avoided or indefinitely delayed if you do.  Oh, the thought of all that wasted money is unbearable!

Hopefully this is the day you will stop being so wasteful; you will follow my car maintenance advice; and you will decide to do what you should be doing to save money car repairs.  So here goes:

  1. Use only premium gasoline in your vehicle no matter how old it is.
  2. Use a gas (and carburetor) cleanser after every fill up (of premium gasoline).
  3. Get your oil changed regularly—every 3 months or every 3000 miles.
  4. Do not make it a habit of driving your car on less than half a tank of gas or on empty.
  5. Create and adhere to a car maintenance schedule that includes regular oil changes; (major and minor) tune ups; tire rotation, balancing, and alignment, et cetera.

These are the things I do to save money on preventable, costly car repairs and to preserve the life of my baby—he’s a ’99 Toyota Corolla—for as long as I possibly can.  So far so good because in the 7 years that I’ve had my baby I’ve not had to pay for any repairs exceeding $300.  If you can’t say the same then I strongly suggest you start implementing my car maintenance advice today (after you research the benefits of doing all of the above for yourself).
